This position is located in the Department of Health And Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations. As a GS-13 Criminal Investigator, the applicant will:
Performs team leader assignments for cases that concern extremely sensitive matters related to critical issues complicated by obscure leads, few visible records, conflicting evidence, other language and cultural barriers; and alleged or suspected violations of Federal statutes, involving fraud against the Government; Conducts the full scope of criminal investigations involving or relating to healthcare fraud. Other types include, but are not limited to, bribery, conflict of interest, improper and false claims, misuse of loan/grant funds, conversion of Government property, embezzlement/theft, kickbacks, obstruction, wire fraud, mail fraud, child support enforcement, false statements, False Claims Act violations, Civil Monetary Penalties, and other offenses committed against the United States; Conducts comprehensive research and analysis of cases, to determine the applicable laws and the implementing regulations that were violated; Plans, coordinates, and initiates contacts with Federal, State, and local officials, and other organizations and individuals related to matters under investigation; Provides advice and assistance to DOJ and U.S. Attorneys in the preparation of cases for presentation to Federal, State, or local grand juries; Testifies before grand juries and in trial courts and administrative hearings, in matters involving violations of Federal, State and local criminal statues; civil fraud; and administrative violations; Age:
The minimum entry age for this position is 21 years of age and the maximum entry age for this position is 36 years of age (the date of appointment must be no later than the date immediately preceding the 37th birthday) unless you have sufficient prior Federal service in a covered law enforcement position or are a preference-eligible applicant. Applicants must have at least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-12 level in the Federal service (or private sector equivalent) that demonstrates experience managing large and complicated investigations as a team member, or as team lead with minimal supervision in relations to abuse and misuse of opioids; investigating and resolving highly sensitive matters regarding health care fraud and questionable prescribing patterns of prescribers/physicians in relations to opioids; developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with the agency, other Federal agencies and the United States Attorney's office; possessing the ability to recognize and make appropriate recommendations regarding system deficiencies and/or vulnerabilities; AND Experience conducting investigation involving Medicare and/or Medicaid. Security and Background Requirements:
A Top Secret clearance may be required to be obtained and maintained and a credit check is required. If not previously completed, a background investigation will be required for all appointees. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements may be grounds for appropriate personnel action. In addition, if hired, a background reinvestigation or supplemental investigation may be required at a later time. False representation may be grounds for non-consideration, non-selection and/or appropriate disciplinary action. This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm and must meet the Lautenberg Amendment requirements as described in Title 18, USC Section 992 (g). Any person who has been convicted of a felony, a misdemeanor or crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm. The term convicted as defined by the statute, excludes any person whose conviction has been expunged, set-aside, pardoned, or any person whose civil rights have been restored, so long as the restoration does not restrict the shipping, transport, possession or receipt of firearms or ammunition. Candidates who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor or crimes of domestic violence within the meaning of the referenced statute are not eligible for this position.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
